I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Bermuda, moved to Canada for University when I was 20 and moved back to Bermuda two years later. As a teenager, I was a saver. I would save about 80% of my paycheck and I enjoyed watching my balance grow. So when it was time for me to leave for Canada, I had over $10K saved. However, when I returned home, I had no savings and about $25K worth of debt (one student loan).
I got a job with a Big 4 Accounting firm, and my saving game plan went out the window. I was buying nice clothes, lunch everyday, and making the bare minimum payments on my loan. Having an emergency fund never crossed my mind because I was enjoying being a Professional Girl getting a professional paycheck. After 3 years of working there, I was out of a job with no savings to sustain me until I found a new one.
Four months and 10 days later, I started my new job. Not working for four months has brought some of the saver back. Sometimes I still make unnecessary purchases, but I am getting better. My goal is to save an emergency fund and to start making additional principal payments on my loan in 2015.
I want to be able to save and build my net worth while enjoying my island home, and take you along for the ride.
