2017 Mid-year Review

July 3, 2017

Increase my net worth by $60,000.

Increasing my net worth, more importantly, my savings is my main focus in 2017. I am determined to sock away 50% of my salary because I am playing catch up in regards to my savings. and so far I have been able to do this each month. It was really easy because I set up automated transfers that happen the day after payday. So I really don’t get a chance to look at it let alone spend it. As of June 30, my net worth has increased by 49% or about $31K. In order to reach this goal, I will need to continue to save $3.8K a month or 50%. My employer pays 14.5% of my salary towards retirement related benefits.

I can admit that I have gone a little overboard here and there with my spending but nothing that will prevent me from reaching this goal. For the second half of 2017 I plan on keeping my spending in check and using a bare bones budget. However, unnecessary spending will not be the reason behind not meeting this goal should I not meet it. Lastly, I have lowered my personal spending amount from $600 per month to $300 per month for the rest of 2017 in an effort to make sure I hit all my financial goals.

Take care of my health.

I have been taking my physical health more seriously this year and have been hitting the gym at least 4 times a week. When the year first started I was doing a body split 5 times a week but now I do TRX twice a week and cardio twice a week. I recently started yoga and will be trying to incorporate that twice a week. I am lucky enough to work for a company that provides a healthy lunch everyday and I tend to eat a salad with whatever protein they have. I have cut out soda and junk food and putting 1 teaspoon of sugar (versus the 4 I used to put) in my coffee. Overall, I have been making consistent and conscious decisions when it comes to what I eat.

Also I have been working on my emotional health because no one wants to be wealthy, physically fit and stressed out or always living in chaos. So I have been practicing mindfulness and my breathing. It allows me to take a moment to step back from a situation and take the appropriate time to respond.

“Some pursue happiness- Others create it.” This quote is something I truly live by because I believe that if you think positively and bring only positive energy into your space than small things will no longer bother you. And also allows you to enjoy what you have and not what you think you are missing out on.

Earn my YellowBelt

Over the last couple of years, my main focus in my professional life was passing my exams and getting my CPA license. Now that I have my license I want to focus on taking on a more challenging task that will allow me to grow as a professional. A YellowBelt is a course that my job offers that teaches you how to maximize value and continuous improvement through eliminating inefficiencies.

For the first half of the year I was not able to work on this goal because I had been focusing on gaining an understanding of my new work load. But I plan on working towards it for the second half of 2017.

Improve the Blog

I always have a set of goals for the blog but I never take them seriously.  Although I didn’t have any studying to do, I was trying to focus on gaining an understanding of my new work load and pass probation so the  blog was put on the back burner. Now that I have passed probation it’s been full steam ahead with the blog. I try to post once a week and I’m working on getting ahead by a month worth of posts.

I have been increasing my social media activity and will continue to work on being more active on Twitter and Instagram. For the second half of 2017, I want to try and figure out Pinterest and how to use it to increase traffic to the blog.

Give back through doing

It is not about how much money you can throw at a charity, but about how much time you can give back to the charities in the community in which you operate. I am fortunate enough to work for a company that believes in giving back and requires employees to volunteer at least once a quarter. However, there is no limit on how many days you volunteer per quarter.

For the first half of the year, I volunteered every other Tuesday with Action on Alzheimer’s and Dementia playing bocce ball with the seniors. I really enjoyed going and spending time with the seniors that came out to play. It is something I look forward to doing because you get to know them. I also signed up for other activities through my job and will continue to volunteer with AAD for the second half of 2017.
